GE13: One in five candidates lose their election deposits

PETALING JAYA: One in five candidates at the 13th general election lost his or her deposit after failing to secure the minimum one eighth or 12.5% of the ballots cast in their respective parliamentary and state constituencies.

A total of 414 candidates out of the 1,901 who contested lost a combined RM2.7mil in election deposits.

Parliamentary candidates are required to place a deposit of RM10,000 while state seat candidates must place a RM5,000 deposit.

Of those who lost the deposits, the lowest number of votes was received by Independent candidate for Sabah's Api-Api state seat, Marcel Jude Joseph, who polled 14 votes from the 12,099 ballots cast.

For parliamentary candidates, the smallest number of ballots received was by Indepen-dent Alirahman Kamseh, who stood in Lawas, Sarawak. He received 69 votes out of the 14,072 ballots cast.

Of the 414, 297 contested in state seats while the others were parliamentary candidates.

Topping the list were a total of 254 Independent candidates followed by 67 from State Reform Party, 43 from Sabah Progres-sive Party, 14 from Berjasa, 11 from KITA, five from Malaysia United People's Party, four from Parti Cinta Malaysia and two from Sarawak Workers Party.

Several of the bigger party candidates also lost their deposits such as DAP's Hai Merawin in Sarawak's Mukah parliamentary seat.

Two Barisan Nasional state seat candidates in Penang - Lau Chiek Tuan and Loke Cheang Gin, both from MCA - lost their deposits in Berapit and Pengkalan Kota.

Four PAS state seat candidates, contesting in Sungai Acheh in Penang and in Pitas, Bugaya and Kunak in Sabah, failed to retain their deposits.

An additional two PAS parliamentary candidates who stood in Labuan and Sarawak's Tanjung Manis also lost their deposits.

Four PKR state assembly candidates lost their deposits after they failed to secure the minimum percentage of votes in Seberang Takir, Terengganu; Sugut in Sabah; and Sedili and Panti in Johor.
