GE13: Mohd Shafie blames social media for swing in urban votes

PETALING JAYA: Social media has played a large part in swinging the urban votes towards the Opposition, especially among the Malays.
Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said lies spread by the Opposition influenced urban voters against Umno and Barisan Nasional.
“I believe that social media was a major factor on the coalition not obtaining the swing in urban votes.
“Unlike the rural areas, the urban voters are driven by issues rather than development,” he said yesterday.
Mohd Shafie said the poor showing of the other coalition parties would not affect the power sharing concept of the coalition.
“The system of power sharing that has worked for more than 50 years will be retained for the benefit of all Malaysians,” he said.
He said MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek's decision that the party would not be taking up any Cabinet post due to the party's performance, should be respected.
Mohd Shafie said the focus should be on forming a Federal Government. “It is not the time to worry about the party elections.”
Umno Puteri chief Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin said Barisan should focus on winning over the rakyat via social media, acknowledging its impact on voters, especially in the urban areas.
“We must double our efforts to counter the Opposition in cyberspace.
“The Opposition's distortions of issues have overshadowed all the work Datuk Seri Najib (Tun Razak) did over the past four years,” she said.
Asked on the polls' effect on the Umno elections, Rosnah said it was not the time to worry about jostling for party posts as every Umno member should be planning for the next general election.
She also dismissed calls that Najib should be held accountable for Barisan's worst performance compared to the 2008's elections.
“The blame should be on all Barisan and Umno members.”
