PETALING JAYA: The Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) has blasted PAS for splitting and stealing votes from its candidate in Kota Damansara.

“We (PSM) could have won but lost after PAS joined the contest and split the votes.

“Thanks to PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, Barisan Nasional was practically handed a state seat in Selangor,” its president Dr Mohd Nasir Hashim said.

He said the party will carry out a post-mortem on its performance.

“This will also include a review of our relationship with the other political parties,” he said here yesterday.

He added PSM only fielded four contestants in the polls and felt that it was caught between the politicking of PAS, DAP and PKR.

“We are a small party and were trapped in the political play of certain quarters within Pakatan.

“As a result, we had to pay the price in the polls,” he added.

Dr Mohd Nasir cited the state seat of Kota Damansara which he was defending but lost to Barisan due to votes being split by the PAS candidate.

Barisan's Halimaton Saadiah Bohan garnered 16,387 votes against Dr Nasir's 14,860 and PAS' Ridzuan Ismail's 7,312, while Independents Halmi Omar, Edros Abdullah and A. Suppiah all lost their deposits.

He said PSM secretary-general S. Arutchelvan also faced the same problem in the contest for the Semenyih state seat in Selangor.

The three-cornered fight saw Barisan's Datuk Johan Abdul Aziz garnering 17,616 votes compared to PKR's Hamidi Hasan with 13,471 and Arutchelvan's 5,568 votes.

PSM also contested the Sungai Siput parliamentary seat in Perak with incumbent Dr Michael Jeyakumar successfully defending his seat while M. Sarasvathy lost in the contest for the Jelapang state seat.

On PSM unhappiness over the split votes caused by Pakatan candidates, Dr Mohd Nasir said the party is likely to submit a memorandum to the respective parties.

“We can voice our objections but it is up to the parties to take action against their candidates who were directed to stop campaigning,” he said.
