GE13: It’s back to work for some reps

JOHOR BARU: Many candidates in the elections would have been resting and recovering from a hectic 15-day gruelling campaign but not Gambir assemblyman M. Asojan.

The MIC man started work and attended to the problems in his constituency.

Asojan's first task yesterday was to help settle a problem at SK Parit Kassan in Bukit Gambir at 8.15am.

“The headmaster called me, saying that the school canteen was not open as the premises was used as a polling centre on Sunday.

“I was worried about the children's well-being as they will not be able to get food during recess time.

“I managed to get my friends and assistants to buy buns and packet drinks for all 250 pupils in time for their recess at 10.15am.”

The busy man also received calls about flash floods in Kg Sengkang in Batu 20.

“I have also been replying SMSes and calls from dozens of well-wishers,” he said, adding that he would later go to the site of an embankment in Kg Melepang Hang Tuah which collapsed after heavy rain on Sunday.

Asojan, who is a third-term incumbent, and the winner in the state's only four-cornered fight in GE13 said that he was used to the hectic schedule.

For Semarang assemblyman Datuk Samsol Bari Jamali, it was back to work yesterday as he visited the home of a 75-year-old woman after the back portion of her house was damaged by an uprooted tree in Kampung Haji Talib.

“Luckily, she was not hurt but the back portion of the house was damaged as the tree was uprooted during a severe storm on Sunday,” he said, adding that arrangements were being made to repair the house and assistance was also being sought from the Welfare Department.

“I will take a break later but for now, attending to my constituents comes first,” the incumbent said.

Meanwhile, Johor PKR legal bureau chief Jimmy Phuah also started work as the new Bukit Batu assemblyman, visiting and thanking his voters.

He said he was proud that now PKR was represented in the Johor state assembly.

“Now, the hard work begins. I will try to fulfil my promises that I made to the voters in Bukit Batu,” he said when met at Kulai PKR office here.
