GE13: US, world leaders congratulate Najib

She was among foreign leaders who congratulated him on his general election victory. - Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: Foreign leaders have sent congratulatory messages to Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on his general election victory.
"We congratulate Barisan Nasional and Prime Minister Najib (Razak) on their victory in Malaysia's 13th general election. We look forward to working with the new government once it is formed," said US State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell, AFP reported.
"We call on all parties to peacefully respect the will of the voters," he added.
Congratulatory messages were also received from British Prime Minister David Cameron, Thailand Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Tuesday called Najib to convey her best wishes.
Najib spoke with Gillard for about 10 minutes after chairing a special meeting with Barisan MPs at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) here.
Najib is also expected to receive calls from several other world leaders later.
Barisan was returned to power when it won 133 of the 222 parliamentary seats to form the new federal government.
Najib took the oath of office as Prime Minister before Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah at Istana Negara here on Monday.
According to a statement released by the British High Commission here, Cameron had called Najib to congratulate him personally on winning the general election.
"The British Prime Minister personally conveyed his congratulations to Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak in a phone conversation last night.
"PM Cameron emphasised the importance of further political and economic reform, building on efforts, thus far.
"He added that he looked forward to strengthening the UK's bilateral relationship with Malaysia," said the statement. - Bernama.
