GE13: MCA members in govt-appointed posts in Perak resigning

By EDMUND NGO

IPOH: MCA members in Perak holding government-appointed positions have started to resign following the party's performance in the 13th general election.

Perak MCA secretary Datuk Tan Chin Meng said the party accepted and respected the voter's decision in the recently-concluded polls.

"The party (MCA) has said before that if our results were poorer compared to 2008, we would not hold on to any politically-appointed positions.

"We are staying true to our word," he told The Star on Tuesday.

Tan, who is also the MCA Ipoh Barat division chief, said a total of 26 members in the division have relinquished their posts as village chiefs, hospital board of visitors committee as well as councillors.

"As far as I understand, those in other divisions such as Batu Gajah and Taiping are also resigning from their posts," he said.

Tan said the voter's elected representatives should bear the responsibility of helping the people now.

Earlier on Monday, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said he would not be defending his presidency at the party's elections this year.

This came after the party won only seven parliamentary and 11 state seats out of the 37 parliamentary and 90 state seats it contested in the May 5 polls.

Dr Chua has since pledged to stabilise the party under "this difficult condition".
