KUALA LUMPUR: MCA acknowledges that it took a massive beating in GE13 but vows to carry out reforms so that the party can move forward with the changing times, said its deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

“MCA suffered a massive blow and significant losses in the polls.

“A review is needed to see what can be done to redeem the party's standing with the clear objective of serving the rakyat and Chinese community as this is MCA's struggle,” Liow, who is Bentong MP, told reporters after a closed-door meeting between the Prime Minister and newly elected Barisan Nasional members of parliament yesterday.

He pledged that MCA's leadership would work as a team as this was crucial in deciding the party's future direction.

“We need to re-engineer the party and also review policies and tailor them to reflect the demographic changes in the nation.

“This is crucial for MCA in moving forward,” he said.

Liow acknowledged the huge Chinese vote swing in the polls reflected a shift in their support to the Opposition, in particular DAP.

“This is the reason why we have to come together and think deeply on how we are to move forward.

“We cannot remain stagnant,” he added.

Although admitting that the party is going through very difficult times, Liow expressed confidence that MCA would be able to overcome the challenges ahead.

“MCA has gone through many ups and downs over the past 64 years since it was established.

“It is a difficult time for us but I believe we will be able to overcome it,” he said.

Liow, who successfully defended his Bentong seat against DAP's Wong Tack, urged party members to remain steadfast and united.

He was overcome with emotion when making the appeal and apologised to journalists for being unable to proceed with his message.

“Sorry, I am unable to continue,” he said.

MCA contested in 37 parliamentary seats and managed to win seven in GE13.
