PETALING JAYA: The call for reconciliation grows stronger with more individuals calling for the need to look beyond racial lines in terms of the elections results.

Centre for Strategic Engagement (Cense) co-founder Rita Sim said the Malay votes were also starting to shift away from Barisan Nasional, although not in the same quantum as seen in Malay-majority seats in urban areas.

“There is just more urbanisation now and when that happens, we will have this kind of phenome- non and there will be implica-tions.

“Whether Barisan or Pakatan (Rakyat), they will have to take into consideration that there is a gro-wing population of young voters, and they will have to restructure themselves,” she said.

Sim, who authored the book Unmistakably Chinese, Genuinely Malaysian said it was still very statesman-like of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to call for national reconciliation.

Universiti Sains Malaysia political sociologist Sivamurugan Pandian said Malay support for Pakatan Rakyat was increasing in the urban areas.

“For example, in Gelang Patah (where DAP's Lim Kit Siang beat former Johor MB Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman), although there were 54% Chinese voters, it was not only the Chinese who contributed to his 14,000-vote majority,” he said.

MIC strategic director S. Vell Paari said the Chinese should not be blamed for voting against Barisan and efforts must be made to find out why they did so.
