GEORGE TOWN: Former Kedah mentri besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak, who slipped into coma after being admitted for a leg infection, has responded well to treatment.

Although Azizan's condition is still considered critical, his press secretary, Mohd Helmi Khalid, said he was improving and could open his eyes and move his limbs.

“He is too weak to speak but his eyes are alert and he recognises those who visited him,” Mohd Helmi said yesterday.

Azizan, 69, was admitted to the emergency department of the Penang Hospital from a private hospital here at about 4pm on Tuesday. He was then moved to the hospital's intensive care unit at about 9.15pm the same day.

His former political secretary, Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, said Azizan went into coma at 5.30am yesterday after he suffered an allergic reaction to the antibiotic treatment.

Newly-appointed Mentri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said the state government and the people of Kedah was praying for Azizan's speedy recovery. Mukhriz accompanied Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah to pay a visit to Azizan.

Among other visitors were Penang Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas, former state and former state health, welfare, caring society and environment committee chairman Phee Boon Poh.

Earlier, PAS vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar and Penang PAS commissioner Datuk Salleh Man were also there at the hospital while Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng delivered a flower basket and “get well soon” wishes to Azizan.

In the just concluded general election, Azizan retained his Sungai Limau state seat for a fifth term, winning a four-cornered fight that also involved Barisan Nasional candidate Mohd Fazillah Mohd Ali and two independents.
