Ex-aide of politician in coma after shooting
Emergency aid: Tan being treated at the Sungai Bakap hospital after the shooting. GEORGE TOWN: The former aide of a senior politician is in serious condition after being shot twice in the head by a gunman outside a coffeeshop.
Tan Hock Chin, 46, who was also Nibong Tebal 1Malaysia Voluntary Patrol Squad captain, was having drinks with several friends when he was shot at close range by a man wearing a motorcycle helmet at 11.05pm on Tuesday in Sungai Daun, Nibong Tebal.
Penang CID chief Senior Asst Comm Mazlan Kesah said the gunman then ran to a waiting motorcycle of an accomplice about 30m away before speeding off.
“The victim was rushed to the Sungai Bakap Hospital where he was treated before being transferred to the Penang Hospital. He is now in a coma.
“In his haste to escape, the gunman’s helmet came off and he also dropped his waist pouch containing several rounds of ammunition,” SAC Mazlan told a press conference yesterday.
He said the motive of the shooting had yet to be determined. Police were investigating whether it was due to business rivalry or disputes due to triad activities.
“We have classified the case as attempted murder under Section 307 of the Penal Code. I would like those with information to call the Rakan COP hotline (04-269 1999) or any police station.”
