GEORGE TOWN: A group Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) students were allegedly roughed up by unidentified men while they were holding a demonstration.

One student was allegedly hit at the back of the head and another pushed to the ground.

Around 50 students were involved in the altercation at the USM Sungai Dua entrance.

The organiser of the demonstration, 23-year-old communication student Saw Jia Ying, said there were close to 100 men whom provoked and chased them away.

Saw alleged that the group used pepper spray on the students.

"I asked the students to move to the Suaram office opposite our campus to take cover," she said, adding that he wanted to ensure the safety of the demonstrators.
