Challenge of men’s pairs all over as Yew Sin-Ee Yi go down fighting

Early exit: Ong Yew Sin (right) and Teo Ee Yi lost 18-21, 18-21 to defending champions Bagas Malauna-Shohibul Fikri of Indonesia in the second round.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s interest in the All-England men’s doubles came to an end when Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi fell to defending champions Bagas Malauna-Shohibul Fikri of Indonesia in the second round in Birmingham yesterday.

Independent pair Yew Sin-Ee Yi led in both games but allowed Bagas-Shohibul to make a comeback and secure a 21-18, 21-18 win in 44 minutes.

The Malaysians, ranked world No. 8, led 12-6 and also 18-15 in the second game but could not force the decider and allowed Bagas-Shohibul to advance to the last eight.

In the mixed doubles, Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing went down fighting to Yuki Kaneko-Misaki Matsutomo of Japan as they failed to advance to the last eight.

Kian Meng-Pei Jing led 19-16 only to allow Yuki-Matsutomoto secure five points in a row for a 21-12, 11-21, 21-19 win.

On Wednesday, another independent pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie were shown the exit in the first round when they lost 21-10, 21-14 Seo Seung-jae-Chae Yu-jung of South Korea.

In the men’s singles, veteran Liew Daren crashed out in the men’s singles first round when Indonesian Chico Aura got the better of him with a 21-9, 21-16.

“I don’t have any injuries but I lost on speed and power. My opponent (Chico) is much younger and that is probably another factor,” said the 35-year-old Daren.

Meanwhile, former world junior champion Li Shifeng of China outplayed compatriot Zhao Junpeng 21-19, 21-17 to book his quarter-final berth yesterday.

The second round witnessed a major upset when India’s Treesa Jolly-Gayathri Gopichand stunned Japan’s Sayaka Hirota-Yuki Fukishima 21-14, 24-22 to storm into the quarter-finals.
