Korean says rivals should fear them
SEOUL: South Korean skipper Lee Woon-jae has warned their World Cup opponents that the team is in excellent form and should not be underestimated.
We are now in much better shape with many experienced players who are currently playing in European leagues, said Woon-jae, comparing the team to the one that made the World Cup semi-finals on home soil in 2002.
Our rivals should fear us.
He said there was intense competition for places on the team, which has driven players to be in top form.
I am trying my best not to get pushed off from my position on the team, he was quoted as saying on the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) website.
South Korea, under Dutch maestro Guus Hiddink, reached the semi-finals in 2002, a run that captivated the nation as they beat Italy and Spain before being knocked out by eventual runners-up Germany.
Now coached by another Dutchman, Dick Advocaat, they have been drawn in a group that pits them against Switzerland and Togo but also 1998 winners France. AFP
