Kaka stars for Milan

ROME: Brazilian midfielder Kaka scored a second-half hat-trick as AC Milan thrashed Chievo 4-1 yesterday to reclaim second place in Serie A, while Treviso were relegated after their 3-1 defeat at Messina.

Sergio Pellisier gave Chievo an early lead, but a rare Alessandro Nesta goal levelled the score before Kaka’s treble ensured all three points for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

The victory ended a satisfactory week for AC Milan who on Tuesday reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, where they will meet Spanish League leaders Barcelona.

Inter Milan had temporarily taken the runners-up spot – which secures automatic entry into next season’s Champions League – after defeating Ascoli 2-1 on Saturday.

Milan’s win at the San Siro left them on 73 points, two clear of Inter but six behind leaders Juventus, who hosted fifth-placed Fiorentina in yesterday’s late match.

AS Roma leapfrogged Fiorentina into the fourth and final Champions League spot courtesy of a 3-1 win over second-from-bottom Lecce at the Olympic Stadium, where Brazilian winger Mancini scored twice for the home side.

Messina put the final nail into Treviso’s coffin to boost their own chances of survival but despite their win they remain in the bottom three.

Reggina are still in danger after they were hammered 4-0 at in-form Parma, as are Cagliari, held to a 1-1 draw at home to Palermo.

Empoli gave themselves hope of retaining their top flight status with a priceless 2-1 win against Sampdoria.

Lazio defeated Siena 3-2 to move up to fifth in their bid to claim a UEFA Cup place next season. – AFP
