Eto’o is face of 2010 World Cup – or is he?

DURBAN: The official World Cup poster looks straightforward enough with an African man heading a ball.

The mystery is over whose face it is.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter strongly hinted on Friday that it was a depiction of Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o, but organisers said it was a compilation of all African fans.

“You have the face here of one of the most popular and well-known players of this continent. He is still playing. He is playing actually in Europe, one of the big clubs,” said Blatter, adding that the player was also from Cameroon.

Eto’o, who plays for Barcelona, fits that bill and FIFA officials later acknowledged Blatter had meant Eto’o.

Local organisers, though, have a different view.

“The face represents every single African supporter” from Morocco to South Africa and from Gambia to Somalia, organisers said in an official statement.

Blatter tried to reconcile the two views.

“What is more important is to give this continent a face, a human face in football,” he said. – AP
