Policeman seriously injured in Belgrade riot
BELGRADE: A policeman was seriously injured when Red Star Belgrade fans clashed with police during a Serbian First Division match on Sunday, police said.
The riot broke out when fans attacked a plain-clothes police officer. The officer fired shots into the air in self-defence after which the assailants battered him with burning flares.
The fans recognised a police officer on duty wearing plain clothes and attacked him, police commander Borivoje Tosic told Belgrade media. The officer sustained serious injuries from burning flares and broken seats and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Riot police moved in to quell the violence and arrested several hooligans in the process.
Belgrade television stations showed footage of the incident that started at half-time, shortly after the visitors had taken a 44th-minute lead.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw and the result left champions Red Star in second position, four points behind leaders and city rivals Partizan, who beat Banat Zrenjanin 2-0 on Saturday. Reuters
