Roma prevent Inter from clinching Serie A title
ROME: AS Roma beat Inter Milan 3-1 yesterday to prevent the Serie A leaders from clinching the league title.
Roma captain Francesco Totti scored on a 25m free kick in the 88th minute at San Siro and Marco Cassetti added another goal for Roma in injury time, handing Inter their first league loss of the season.
Inter had not lost in any competition since they were beaten by Bayern Munich 2-0 in the group stage of the Champions League in September.
Roma midfielder Simone Perrotta redirected a cross from Christian Chivu from one metre in the 44th and Marco Materazzi equalised for Inter in the 52nd with a controversial penalty.
Roma goalkeeper Alexander Doni was called for tripping Adriano but replays indicated otherwise.
Inter could have clinched the title if they beat Roma.
Still, Inter hold a 13-point lead on Roma at the top of the standings.
Inter's next chance to clinch the title comes on Sunday at Siena, where they need to win and hope Roma lose at Atalanta.
AC Milan improved their fourth-place position with a 5-2 win at last-place Ascoli. Alberto Gilardino and Kaka each scored twice in the first half and Clarence Seedorf added another for Milan in the 75th.
Inter lead with 81 points, followed by Roma (68), Lazio (57) and Milan (53).
Lazio ended a 0-0 draw at home with Chievo Verona with nine men.
Lazio's Valon Behrami and Chievo's Paolo Sammarco were each expelled for bumping each other in the 45th minute, and Lazio's Luciano Zauri was also sent off in the second half.
Empoli beat 10-man Atalanta 2-0 with goals by Luca Saudati and Sergio Almiron.
Former Italy forward Christian Vieri came on for Atalanta in the 71st, marking his return from a year of injuries. – AP
