Badminton: Bad news for duo

By LIM TEIK HUAT

KUALA LUMPUR: Top national women's doubles pair Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty are out of the Asian Badminton Championships (ABC), which will be played in Johor Baru from April 10-15.

Coach Cheah Soon Kit withdrew the pair, who were seeded second in the tournament, on the advice of the doctor yesterday. Eei Hui is still nursing an ankle injury picked up in the Swiss Open last month and Pei Tty has complained of pain in her thigh.

“There is a lack of power in her movement and the doctor said that it was better not to risk Eei Hui to aggravating the injury. It is better for her to get fully fit before the Super Series resume next month,” said Soon Kit.

The Olympic qualifying period begins on May 1 and the Super Series resume with the fifth round in Singapore (May 1-6) followed by the Indonesia Open (May 7-13).

Out: Injured top doubles pair Chin Eei Hui (right) and Wong Pei Tty have been asked to withdraw from the ABC so as not to aggravate the former’s ankle injury.
The services of Eei Hui-Pei Tty are also required for the Sudirman Cup in Glasgow from June 11-17 and Malaysia will be featuring in Division One this time.

Pei Tty will still feature in the ABC. She is expected to recover to play in the mixed doubles, partnering Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari.

The ABC will be the last tournament to offer ranking points before the entries for the World Championships scheduled for Aug 13-19 in Bukit Jalil are decided.

Eei Hui-Pei Tty were quarter-finalists in last year's competition and are currently ranked sixth in the world.

Only the top eight pairs will be seeded for the world meet and Soon Kit believes the pair's absence from the ABC meet would not affect their ranking position much.

“We have to wait for the rankings after ABC but I think they should remain among the top eight because the top pairs are also absent from the ABC too. The highest ranked pair in the tournament are Taiwan's world number four Cheng Wen-hsing-Chien Yu-chin,” he said.

Eei Hui-Pei Tty beat the Taiwanese for the first time en route to becoming the first Malaysian women’s pair to reach the semi-finals of the All-England in Birmingham last month.
