Sarawak aiming to be Sukma champs

By JACK WONG

KUCHING: Sarawak is eyeing 74 gold medals and is determined to recapture the overall championship title in the Sukma (Sukan Malaysia) games which begin in Terengganu on May 31.

State Social Development and Urbanisation Minister Datuk William Mawan Ikom said the state would be represented by its biggest ever contingent of 605 athletes to the biennial national games.

“Our athletes will be competing in 32 sports,” he said at the State Assembly on Tuesday.

Mawan, whose ministry is in charge of sports, said Sarawak was well prepared to regain the glory it had won in the 1990, 1992 and 1994 editions of Sukma.

He said the state’s athletes were now undergoing centralised training at UiTM and Samarahan Divisional sports complex near here under the watchful eyes of international-class coaches.

Mawan said four of the Sarawak Sukma athletes would represent Malaysia in the Beijing Olympic Games in August. They are diver Bryan Nickson Lomas, and swimmers Elizabeth Jimie, Pandella Rinong and Daniel William Henry Bego.
