IAAF remove Americans’ 4x400m world record
THE International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) removed yesterday the men’s 4x400m world record after one of the sprinters, Antonio Pettigrew, admitted to doping in May.
Americans Jerome Young, Pettigrew, Tyree Washington and Michael Johnson clocked the record time of 2:54.20 to win at the now-defunct Goodwill Games in New York on July 22, 1998.
The IAAF said that the new official record would go to another US team of Andrew Valmon, Quincy Watts, Butch Reynolds and Johnson, who clocked 2:54.29 in the World Championships in Stuttgart on Aug 22, 1993.
Pettigrew told a US Court he had taken banned substances after the 1996 US trials.
The International Olympic Committee earlier this month also stripped the US of their Sydney 2000 Olympics gold medal following Pettigrew’s confession.
Pettigrew acknowledged using the prohibited blood booster erythropoietin (EPO) and human growth hormone (HGH) beginning on or about January 1997 through 2003.
