Yank floored by own weight
US wrestler Daniel Cormier lost his fight for Olympic glory yesterday without even setting foot on the mat, having been taken down by that common of American afflictions – excess body weight.
Michel Batista of Cuba was declared the winner by walkover in the 96kg men's freestyle wrestling preliminary round bout.
When Cormier failed to make 96kg at a weigh-in on Wednesday he made a desperate bid to tone down, and succeeded, only to have the team doctor rule him out because of the impact the crash diet had on his body.
“It's not a secret that Daniel has struggled with weight for years,” said his exasperated coach Kevin Jackson.
Nearly half of adult Americans are overweight, according to official studies.
The 29 year-old, Comier came to prominent when he won the Pan American championship in 2003, shortly after his daughter was killed in a car accident.
The following year he finished fourth at the Athens Olympics and in 2005 he was second at the world championships. – AFP
