More sponsor woes hit US PGA
HILTON HEAD ISLAND (South Carolina): The traditional US PGA Tour event after the Masters, the Heritage Classic, will lose its title sponsor after next April’s edition of the event, PGA officials said Tuesday.
Verizon announced that it will not continue past 2010 with its backing of the event, which started in 1987, while tournament and PGA officials said they will immediately launch a search for a new corporate sponsor.
“We will work closely with the Heritage Classic Foundation in an effort to secure a new title sponsor,” PGA Tour operations chief Rick George said.
A struggling global economy has prompted sponsors to pull out of several US PGA events this year, notably at Phoenix and San Diego and suburban Detroit.
“It made sense to restructure our future involvement with the PGA Tour to focus on select events that will provide more opportunities for business development throughout the year,” Verizon senior marketing vice president Becky Carr said. — AFP
