Our women cagers beaten by Guangzhou side in opening match
KUALA LUMPUR: The national women’s team got off to a dismal start in the Malaysian International Basketball Championships after losing 54-66 to China Guangzhou Youth Team at the Maba Stadium yesterday.
Malaysia, the 2007 Korat SEA Games gold medallists, crumbled in the first two quarters, trailing 7-14 and 11-20 respectively.
Although they played much better in the last two quarters (18-15 and 18-17), it was still not good enough to overcome the China team.
Suik May Kew top scored for the national team with 20 points.
National coach Tan See Wah blamed poor shooting for his team’s defeat.
“I am disappointed with our shooting. We had more rebounds but could not get the ball into the basket,” said See Wah.
He also said that a few of the girls, who were making their international debut, were also nervous.
“We still have two more matches to play. Hopefully, the girls will put up a better show,” said See Wah, whose team will face Singapore Home United today.
The Singapore team also lost their opening match, going down 36-74 to the Chinese Li Hai San Senior Middle High School.
In the men’s competition, Hong Kong notched their second win by defeating China Zhuhai Duty Free Enterprise Group 97-76.
Hong Kong, who are preparing for the East Asian Games in December, will face Philippines Pharex today.
