Giants lead the way
By ERIC SAMUEL
PETALING JAYA: Three teams — KL Plus FC, Negri Sembilan and Selangor — have booked their quarter-final tickets from their respective groups in the Malaysia Cup competition last night.
Last week, Kelantan were the first team to qualify from Group E while the competition for the remaining four berths will go down the wire when the final round of matches are played on Tuesday.
KL Plus, who are making their first appearance in the Malaysia Cup, stormed past Malacca 4-0 at the Hang Tuah Stadium. The Highwaymen top the Group A standings with 13 points.
Premier League Golden Boot winner Harris Safwan Kamal on loan from T-team Terengganu, scored a brace in the seventh and 44th minutes while Mohd Fadli Shaari also scored two goals in the 47th minute and 78th minutes.
In the same group, second-placed Perlis were held to a 1-1 draw by Pahang at the Darul-makmur Stadium in Kuantan. Pahang skipper Shahrizan Salleh scored from a long range effort in the 37th minute before Azi Shahril Azmi drew level for the Northern Lions in the 84th minute.
Go away: Johor FC’s Mohd Anis Faron pushes My Team’s Depan Sakwati Kandasamy during their Malaysia Cup match in Petaling Jaya Saturday. Johor FC won 4-2. Super League’s Golden Boot winner Mohd Nizaruddin Yusop had earlier muffed from the spot kick in the 40th minute.
In Group B, Negri on 15 points could only chalk up a narrow 1-0 win over lowly Sarawak. S. Kunalan scored the winner in the 70th minute. Second-placed Terengganu are set to qualify after collecting 12 points when they defeated Johor 4-2 at the Larkin Stadium.
In Group C, Johor FC lead the standings with 12 points after they defeated UPB-MyTeam 4-1 at the MBPJ Stadium. Johor FC will wrap up their fixtures against Perak and only need a point to clinch their ticket.
Perak’s hopes of making the quarter-finals took a dent when Kuala Lumpur held them to a 1-1 draw at the KL Football Stadium in Cheras. Abdul Hadi Yahya put the City boys infront in the 40th minute from the spot kick before Razali Umar Kandasamy scored in stoppage time.
Selangor are through from Group D after a 2-2 draw with Police at the Selayang Municipal Council Stadium.
The Red Giants top the group with 13 points while second-placed Kuala Muda Naza FC kept their chances alive with a 3-1 win over Sabah at the Tawau Stadium.
Defending champions Kedah and Penang picked up wins in Group E last night. Kedah edged Kelantan 1-0 while the Panthers defeated Armed Forces 3-2.
However, Kedah and Penang are not assured of a place in the quarter-finals. The two have seven points each and are down to play each other on Tuesday.
