Malaysia stage fightback to edge Singapore in extra time

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s bounced back from the brink of defeat to beat Singapore Home United 73-68 in extra-time in the Malaysian International Basketball Championship at the Maba Stadium here yesterday.

The national team, who lost to China’s Guangzhou youth team on Friday, were tied 61-61 at the end of regulation time.

The match went into extra time and Malaysia rose to the occasion to edged their opponents by five points.

Malaysia took a 36-24 lead in the first-half but Singapore fought back to lead 60-57 with one minute left on the clock. However, the homesters stormed back to force extra-time and eventually clinched victory.

China Guangzhou youth team, who defeated Singapore Home United in the first match on Friday, beat Chinese Taipei Li Hai San Middle High School 88-72.

In the men’s competition, Chinese Taipei Pure Youth Construction team continued their excellent run to chalk up their fourth consecutive win by defeating China Zhuhai Duty Free Enterprise Group 94-66 yesterday.

They are the only unbeaten team and have virtually won the men’s title. They will complete their fixtures against Hong Kong today.

In the last match of the day, Malaysia chalked up their third win by defeating Korea Chosun University 93-87.

Malaysia will end their round-robin match against Philippines Pharex today and they need to win to finish second.

Men: Philippines Pharex 97 Hong Kong 92, Chinese Taipei Pure Youth Construction 94 China Zhuhai Duty Free Enterprise Group 66, Korea Chosun University 87 Malaysia 93.

Women: China Guangzhou Youth Team 88 Chinese Taipei Li Hai San Senior Middle High School 72, Singapore Home United 68 Malaysia 73.
