Malaysian men’s basketballers finish as the runners-up
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia emerged as the runners-up in the men’s competition of the Malaysian International Basketball Championships after recording a 91-71 win over Philippines Pharex in their final match at the Maba Stadium here yesterday.
Chinese Taipei Pure Youth Construction claimed the title with a 100% win record in the six-team tournament. They wrapped up their fixture with a 98-83 win over Hong Kong yesterday.
Hong Kong finished third followed by China Zuhai Duty Free Enterprise Group, Korea Chosun University and Pharex.
Defending champions Malaysia, whose defeat was by the Taiwanese side (74-93) on Friday, trailed Pharex 18-26 after the first period but were 42-40 up at half time. In the second half, Malaysia, who were without foreign players, chalked up 49 points against 39 by the Filipino side to take victory.
In the four-team women’s competition, Malaysia finished third after losing 67-93 to Chinese Taipei Li Hai San Senior Middle High School. China Guangzhou Youth downed Singapore Home United 83-61 to take the title.
