Kubica looking for security at next team
JAPANESE GRAND PRIX
SUZUKA
Robert Kubica wants to join a Formula One team that has a secure future and will make his decision soon, the Pole said yesterday.
Kubica, currently driving for BMW-Sauber, is widely expected to join Renault, who will be racing under a suspended permanent ban until 2011 due to the team’s role in a race-fixing controversy.
BMW are pulling out of F1 and their Swiss-based team have yet to secure a definite slot on the starting grid despite new ownership and the promise of Ferrari engines.
Japan’s Toyota have also said they were interested in Kubica.
“Two of the teams say publicly that they are interested with me, but I have other options as well,” Kubica said. “I will make my decision soon.
“The future of the team is a big factor and big influence on my decision,” he added.
“I would not like to be in the same situation I’m in with BMW-Sauber - that in the middle of the season the company is announcing it’s retiring from Formula One.
“I do not want to be in this position.”
Fernando Alonso has backed Kubica to replace him at Renault after the double F1 world champion joins Ferrari at the end of the season.
Renault said in a statement on Thursday they would make an announcement about the Spaniard’s successor next week, after today’s Japanese Grand Prix.
Toyota, which says it is committed to F1 racing, faces persistent rumours it will follow Japanese rival Honda in leaving the sport because of billions of dollars in losses. — Reuters
