Typhoon may wash out Japan’s qualifier
TOKYO: A powerful typhoon approaching Japan’s main islands could force the postponement of today’s Asian Cup qualifier against Hong Kong.
The Japan Football Association (JFA) said yesterday a decision would be made at midday local time today on whether to play the game in Shizuoka, southwest of Tokyo.
Heavy rainfall has already disrupted much of the US$1.25mil Japan Open men’s tennis tournament in Tokyo Bay with play only possible on centre court under its retractable roof.
Doubles matches and the lower tier women’s event have been moved to a downtown indoor venue, causing a shortfall in on-the-day ticket sales.
Typhoon Melor, which hit central Japan today, could be the most devastating storm to hit Japan’s main islands in more than 10 years, according to the Meteorological Agency.
Television news warned of similarities to a deadly 2004 typhoon at the same time of year that killed 95 people, bringing transport chaos and disrupting production. — Reuters
