Peru fear the referee more than Argentina
LIMA: Peru are more concerned about Bolivian referee Rene Ortube than facing Argentina in Saturday’s World Cup qualifier, striker Johan Fano said on Tuesday.
Peru are bottom of the South American group and out of the running for next year’s Finals in South Africa but Argentina must win to remain on course for at least a play-off.
“What I fear right now is the referee. I think we have to be very careful with that, let’s hope, God willing, that the refereeing is good,” Fano, who plays for Colombia’s Once Caldas, told reporters ahead of the match in Buenos Aires.
“Ortube has refereed Peru many times and, hurtfully, things haven’t gone well ... Let’s hope he’s fair, that he doesn’t favour the so-called big team of South America, which is Argentina.”
Diego Maradona’s Argentina side are in a precarious fifth place in the group. The top four teams go through automatically to the Finals while the team in fifth will play off for one more berth against the side finishing fourth in the CONCACAF region. — Reuters
