Bruised and battered Shark stays focussed

A HAGGARD Greg Norman vowed the break-up of his marriage would not be a distraction to his International team.

Norman appeared at the captain’s news conference on Tuesday at Harding Park Golf Course looking battered and bruised, his right arm in a sling after shoulder surgery and his fairy-tale marriage to former tennis great Chris Evert on the rocks.

News that the popular Australian with the movie star good looks and the American tennis queen were separating after just 15 months made headlines last week but Norman said his breakup was not part of any discussion in his team’s locker room.

“I’m not going to talk about any of that personal life right now,” he told reporters. “The situation right now is we are here for the Presidents Cup and it’s all about the Presidents Cup.

“My guys are in a great state of mind about being positive about getting out there and playing and come Thursday they are going to perform.

“We haven’t even talked about it (the breakup with Evert). We talked about my shoulder, absolutely. It’s pretty hard to ignore that.

“But, at the end of the day, somebody’s private life is their private life. They respect that.

“This (is not) about me just because I’m the captain of the team. It’s all about the team.”

While Norman sidestepped talk of his marriage, he faced head on difficult questions about using one of his two captain’s picks on Adam Scott, who has seen his world ranking plummet in the past 11 months from number three to 65.

Norman acknowledged Scott’s poor form but said the struggling Australian’s game might be just a vote of confidence away from returning him to winning form.

The International team captain said there could be other factors at work away from the course affecting Scott’s play — something he is all too aware of.

“Sometimes, to me, a shot of confidence in the arm of an individual, just like giving him a spot, is what is necessary to turn him around,” he added. — Reuters
