Monfils, Wawrinka reach last eight in Japan
TOKYO: Former world junior number one Gael Monfils completed a rain-interrupted long day by beating Marco Chiudinelli to reach the quarter-finals at the Japan Open tennis tournament yesterday.
The French fourth seed, who fired off 15 aces while beating Marsel Ilhan of Turkey on Monday, hit yet another 10 aces to beat the Swiss 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in the second round.
Beijing Olympic doubles gold medallist Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, seeded seventh, joined Monfils in the quarter-finals by beating Simon Greul of Germany 6-3, 6-2.
In the first round action, Richard Gasquet powered his way through, beating Philipp Petzschner of Germany 6-3, 6-2, setting up a second-round meeting with fellow Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Unheralded qualifier Ernests Gulbis of Latvia showed his potential by upsetting sixth seed Radek Stepanek, using his serve to score a solid 6-4, 6-4 victory over the Czech player.
In the second round, Gulbis will take on Juan Monaco of Argentina, the winner over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain, who abandoned their match at 0-5 down. — AFP
