Malaysia down Hong Kong for second straight win
By AFTAR SINGH
KUALA LUMPUR: Defending champions Malaysia chalked up their second straight win in the Malaysia International Basketball Championships when they edged Hong Kong 79-74 at the Maba Stadium here last night.
Malaysia, who beat debutants China Zhuhai Duty Free Enterprise Group 85-60 on Wednesday, had to ward off a strong challenge by Hong Kong for a slim one-point (40-39) lead in the first-half.
Sneaky move: Malaysia’s Loh Shee Fai (right) trying to steal the ball from Hong Kong’s Poon Chi Ho during their match. Malaysia, who are without any foreign cagers, played exceptionally well in last two quarters to eventually win the match by five points.
Li Wei Chee was the top scorer for Malaysia with 18 points.
National coach Goh Cheng Huat was thrilled with his boys’ fighting display.
“It was a close match but my players gave their best and truly deserved the win.
“However, we face a daunting task against the Taiwan team, who have chalked up two convincing wins,” said Cheng Huat.
Chinese Taipei Pure Youth Construction continued their excellent run by beating Korea Chosun University 101-73.
In their first match on Wednesday, the Taiwanese team hammered the Philippines Pharex 108-68.
China Zhuhai registered their first win when they beat the Philippines Pharex 73-66.
Meanwhile, the women competition begins today with Malaysia taking on China Guangzhou Youth while Chinese Taipei Li Hai San Senior Middle School face Singapore Home United.
