Our engineers earn stint in Lotus UK base
PETALING JAYA: The 1Malaysia F1 Racing Team, which will be known as Lotus F1 Racing when the season begins in Bahrain in March next year, is not just about joining the Formula One circus but is also about transfer of technology to Malaysian hands.
For a start, a pioneer batch of 20 Malaysian engineers will be leaving on attachment at the United Kingdom base sometime this month.
Riad Asmat, the newly appointed chief executive officer of the 1Malaysia F1 Racing Team, said there was a surge in interest among the Malaysians with engineering backgrounds to join the team.
“We received thousands of replies after the job offers came up and there are many Malaysians working with foreign companies who have expressed their willingness to work with the team.
“The idea is to eventually have Malaysians working on building and developing the racing cars in the near future.
“The local involvement will eventually be increase but these group could be there for two to three years to learn about the technology and know-how,” said Riad, who is pleased that they are three days ahead in the current schedule of the building of the car.
The target is to get the car ready for testing at Sepang Circuit by February next year.
The team have also signed up with engine suppliers Cosworth and will be using Bridgestone tyres for their debut Formula One season.
