Koo-Wong clear qualifying hurdles
PETALING JAYA: Koo Kien Keat-Wong Pei Tty cleared their mixed doubles qualifying round hurdles to ensure Malaysia are represented in the event at the Hong Kong Open starting today.
Kien Keat-Pei Tty brushed aside Taiwan’s Hsieh Yu-hsin-Chia Chen-yang 21-18, 21-12 in the second match of the qualifiers.
They had earlier defeated Chan Dick Long-Tsang Wing Chiu of Hong Kong 21-5, 21-8.
The Malaysians will take on South Korea’s Ko Sung-hyun-Ha Jung-eun in today’s first round.
This is only their third tournament together since renewing their partnership in the Denmark Open last month. They failed to make the main draw.
They then made it as far as the quarter-finals in the French Open, which ended on Nov 1.
Kien Keat-Pei Tty went their separate ways after winning the World Championships bronze medal in the 2006 Madrid edition.
Doubles coach Rexy Mainaky decided to pair them up again ahead of next month’s Laos SEA Games.
Three Malaysians – Chiang Jiann Shiarng, Pei Wee Chung and Sairul Amar Ayob – fell in the first round of the men’s singles qualifiers yesterday.
Men’s doubles pair Chow Pak Chu-Hong Chieng Hun, however, overcame Vietnam’s Bui Bang Duc-Dao Man Thang 21-19, 13-21, 21-5 to reach the main draw.
Pak Chu-Chieng Hun will join five other Malaysian pairs – second seeds Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif, Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choong Eng, Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah and Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen – in the main draw tomorrow.
