Malaysia have Thailand, Vietnam for company
PETALING JAYA: Next month’s Under-23 football competition in the Laos SEA Games will be no walk in the park for Malaysia.
Coach K. Rajagopal’s men have been drawn with favourites Thailand and Vietnam in Group A of the competition, which will begin in Vientiane on Dec 2. The other teams in the group are Timor Leste and Cambodia.
Group B comprises hosts Laos, Indonesia, Singapore and Myanmar. The top two from each group qualify for the semi-finals.
Rajagopal will miss three key players because of injuries. They are Mohd Khyril Muhymeen, Azlan Ahmad Zainal and Bunyamin Umar.
Malaysia last won the football gold medal at the 1989 KL SEA Games.
Meanwhile, five teams will compete in women’s football. They are hosts Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam and Malaysia.
The SEA Games are scheduled to be held from Dec 9-18.
