Newell's beats Chacarita 1-0 to take Apertura lead

BUENOS AIRES: Chacarita Juniors midfielder Omar Zarif conceded a freak own goal to give Newell's Old Boys a 1-0 win Friday and top spot in Argentina's Apertura tournament.

In the day's other match, Tigre registered only its second win of the season after Martin Morel's strike earned a 1-0 home win against Godoy Cruz de Mendoza.

Newell's took a three-point lead atop the table after Zarif over-hit a back-pass from the touchline, beating goalkeeper Cristian Cejas in the 39th minute.

The title looks to be a race between Newell's and Banfield after third-placed Estudiantes were beaten 3-0 at Rosario Central in midweek.

Newell's have played a game more than second-placed Banfield.

Tigre, meanwhile, remains bottom of the league despite beating mid-table Godoy Cruz.

Morel notched the winner in the 19th minute with a low shot from the edge of the box following a careless clearance by Sebastian Salomon.

The remaining round 14 fixtures will be played Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

The round's matches are: Banfield-Velez Sarsfield, Colon de Santa Fe-Argentinos Juniors, San Lorenzo-Independiente, River Plate-Atletico Tucuman, Arsenal de Sarandi-Boca Juniors, Racing Club-Estudiantes La Plata, Gimnasia La Plata-Huracan, and Rosario Central-Lanus. - AP
