Shooter Hasli shows his prowess in standard pistol event

By RAJES PAUL

SUBANG: Sharp-shooter Hasli Izwan Amir Hasan will be out to set a new milestone in his career at the Laos SEA Games in December.

The 32-year-old ironman of the Malaysian pistol shooting event has set himself a target of winning more than one gold medal at the biennial meet for the first time.

After winning the gold medal in his pet event – the rapid fire – on a regular basis at the Games, he is finally ready to master the standard pistol too.

Yesterday, he showed that his dream could come true when he bagged the 25m standard pistol gold medal with an impressive score of 567 points at the National Shooting Championships at the Subang Shooting Range.

Seeing double: Hasli Izwan Amir Hasan posing with the NSAM 60th Results anniversary posters at the National Championships yesterday.

It was his third gold in the tournament, having won the centre-fire and rapid fire events in the first two days respectively.

“I am getting more consistent in the standard pistol event now. I will be competing in both these events for the first time at the SEA Games and, hopefully, I will be able to achieve a double,” said Hasli.

Just last month, he scored 570 points to shoot down the 22-year-old national record of 566 belonging to Sabiamad Ahad en route to winning the men’s 25m standard pistol event at the Tun Hanif Trophy Championships.

“If I can maintain the score of 570, I will have a chance to challenge for gold. My closest rivals in this event are shooters from Vietnam.”

Before this, Hasli has been dominant in his favourite event – the rapid fire – for almost eight years.

In fact, he was the SEA Games gold medallist in this event in Kuala Lumpur (2001), Manila (2005) and Korat (2007). The pistol events were not contested at the 2003 Games in Brunei.

“I will continue to shoot for honours for my country as long as my services are needed,” said Hasli, who trains under Mohd Hashim Desa.

“The national meet is the last tournament before the SEA Games. I will be heading back to Langkawi for centralised training to fine tune my performances in the two events.”

And if NSAM give him their blessings, he may also compete in the centre fire pistol event. But his chances of winning a medal will be slim.

Due to his commitment to excel at the Games, Hasli has been given a break from his job as sports development officer at the Youth and Sports Ministry.
