Le Guen seeks to extend deal with Cameroon
YAOUNDE: Cameroon coach Paul Le Guen said he would seek to sign an extension to his contract after helping the Indomitable Lions secure an African record sixth World Cup Finals appearance.
Frenchman Le Guen was on a short term deal with the Cameroon Football Federation which expired on Saturday after the 2-0 win over Morocco in Fes in their final qualifying match.
“I will meet the federation officials next weekend but I would like to continue and if this is also the sentiment of the Cameroon football leaders, then I will. It is very likely,” he told reporters after the victory.
Le Guen was parachuted in to try and salvage Cameroon’s campaign after they picked up just a single point from their first two matches in the final round group and were bottom of the standings.
Coach Otto Pfister was fired in May and caretaker Thomas Nkono stayed for just one game before Le Guen, who left Paris St Germain at the end of last season, took over in July.
He has won four successive qualifiers since to catapult Cameroon to a four-point winning margin in their group.
“The key has been the talent of the players. We didn’t undergo a dramatic change of personnel but I wanted to change the team dynamic. I wanted them to want to come and play for the national team and I sought to give them the best conditions possible.”
Le Guen demanded first class travel and hotels for the side, and beefed up medical staff and training facilities. He also appointed three-time African Footballer of the Year Samuel Eto’o as captain, deposing Rigobert Song but still keeping the veteran defender in the team. — Reuters
