Coach Jae-hyung tries out new team
KUALA LUMPUR: National archery coach Lee Jae-hyung is taking a big gamble to test out a new men’s team combination in the Asian Championships, which will begin today in Bali.
He has named Cheng Chu Sian, Mohd Zulkifli Tahlil and Ariff Farhan Ibrahim for the competition today, leaving out Olympian Wan Khalmizam Wan Abdul Aziz (pic).
Jae-hyung wants to retain the trio for Malaysia’s defence of the SEA Games team title in Laos next month. And he is keeping his fingers crossed that they would prove his decision right by doing well in the Asian meet.
“This is the first time that these three archers will compete in a team event. I named Ariff ahead of Khalmizam because of the latter’s poor condition,” said the Korean.
“The Asian meet will be a perfect competition, especially for Ariff, to prove himself. He has been consistent in training.
“All the big names from South Korea, China, Taiwan, Japan and India are competing in Bali. It will be a challenging time for our archers.”
Jae-hyung, however, has named Khalmizam for the individual event. In the women’s competition, Malaysia will bank on SEA Games-bound S. Anbarasi, Noor Aziera Taip and Nur Amirah Mohd.
At the 2007 Korat SEA Games, Malaysia won the men’s team gold through Chu Sian, Khalmizam and Mohd Marbawi Sulaiman. But Marbawi failed to make the SEA Games squad this time after struggling to find his footing throughout this year.
