Thai teen terror Ratchanok ends Malaysian women’s singles hope
PETALING JAYA: The youngest world junior champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand continued to put Malaysia’s women’s singles back-up shuttlers to shame when she continued her march in the Malaysia International Challenge in Ipoh yesterday.
Yesterday, the 14-year-old shuttler tamed second seed Sannatasah Saniru 21-13, 21-15 in just 27 minutes to set up a semi-final meeting with compatriot Nitchaon Jindapol.
Just a day ago, Ratchanok had crushed Tee Jing Yi 21-13, 21-16 in the second round.
With the defeat of Sannatasah and Jing Yi, who are eyeing places in the Uber Cup team next year, Malaysia’s challenge has ended in the women’s singles.
On Wednesday, Malaysian top seed Lydia Cheah, hampered by a nagging back injury, was sent packing 8-21, 10-21 by Taiwanese Tai Tze-ying.
Malaysia, however, are on course to win the remaining four titles in the satellite tournament.
SEA Games-bound Liew Daren failed to set up an all-Malaysian men’s singles semi-finals when he crashed out 21-9, 16-21, 19-21 to Thailand’s Suppanyu Avihingsanon.
But Tan Chun Seang proved that he made the right decision to return to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) fold when he beat compatriot Mohd Arif Abdul Latif 21-16, 12-21, 21-16 to join Chong Wei Feng and Chan Kwong Beng in the last four. Chun Seang will take on Kwong Beng for a place in the final.
Malaysia’s men’s and women’s doubles top seeds Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong and Woon Khe Wei-Sabrina Chong are also in the last four.
