No repeat of heroics as Mew Choo succumbs to Shixian
PETALING JAYA: A stirring late fightback was not good enough to see Wong Mew Choo through to the semi-final of the China Open in Shanghai yesterday.
The Malaysian went down 10-21, 22-24 to world No. 20 Wang Shixian of China in the 45-minute quarter-final match.
Just a day ago Mew Choo had scalped the world No. 1 and top seed Wang Yihan in the second round but, yesterday, she found the lower ranked China shuttler a tough nut to crack.
Mew Choo failed to settle down quickly in the first game and that gave Shixian the confidence to stroll to a 21-10 win.
The Malaysian came alive in the middle of the second game to fight neck-and-neck with Shixian but to no avail.
Mew Choo, the 2007 China Open champion, can still walk tall. Her victory over Yihan was her first big win in two years and is certainly a timely boost ahead of the Laos SEA Games next month.
In the men’s singles, three-time world champion Lin Dan brushed aside Simon Santoso of Indonesia 21-12, 21-12 to set up a meeting with Park Sung-hwan of South Korea.
The other semi-final will be between Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark and China’s Chen Jin.
