Ahmad takes over as Kedah coach, starts training
By LOGANATH VELLOO
ALOR SETAR: Fallen champions Kedah have begun training for the new season even before the Malaysia Cup final is played in Saturday.
Yesterday, the Kedah FA named former international Ahmad Yusof as their new coach. The former Pahang coach signed on a one-year contract and comes in as the replacement for Mohd Azraai Khor, who quit after Kedah’s elimination in the group stage of the Malaysia Cup competitions last month.
Ahmad, who was the assistant to Yunus Alif at Proton FC this year, will have big shoes to fill as Azraai had led Kedah to an unprecedented back-to-back treble-winning seasons in 2007 and 2008 in his six years in charge of the Canaries.
And Ahmad has wasted no time in getting cracking in his new job. He met the Kedah players for the first time yesterday evening and will begin pre-season training today.
“I am taking up a huge challenge as Kedah are an elite team in Malaysian football. I want to play my part in helping Kedah return to winning ways,” he said.
“Nothing less than a trophy will satisfy the Kedah supporters. And I hope to get the full support from the players, coaches, management and fans alike to achieve this target.”
Radhi Mat Din and Ahmad Sobri will continue as the Kedah assistant coaches while Datuk Khazali Din remains as team manager
