KLHC set to make their bow in MHL
KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur Hockey Club are set to make their debut in the Premier Division of the Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) next month.
They were admitted as affiliates of the Kuala Lumpur Hockey Association on Sunday and will take over the place vacated by double champions Ernst and Young in the league.
The KLHA president, George Koshy, said yesterday: “I can confirm that they are a fully registered club who are now affiliated to us. It is now left to them to decide on their participation in the MHL.”
Entries for the league close on Friday and teams from the top flight last year — Sapura, Tenaga Nasional, Nur Insafi and Maybank — are expected to confirm participation.
The Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) hope to have a minimum of six teams in the fray and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL), another newly-affiliated side in the KLHA, are also keen to take part.
It is learnt that most of the players who featured for Ernst and Young are expected to play for KL Hockey Club.
The KLHA secretary, V. Rajamanickam, said that the club were fully dedicated to the development of hockey players in KL and would work closely with the association.
The Premier League begins on Dec 4 and it is expected to end in February.
The competition takes a carnival format and matches will be played on weekends. The MHF have identified seven competition venues — KL, Malacca, Seremban, Johor Baru, Penang, Ipoh and Kuantan.
