Double champions Ernst and Young sever ties with MHL
KUALA LUMPUR: Last year’s double champions Ernst and Young have ended their association with the Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) when only six teams registered for the new Premier Division when entries closed yesterday.
Former champions Tenaga Nasional, Maybank, Sapura and Nur Insafi are back in the fray with two new entries – KL Hockey Club and University Kuala Lumpur.
The Premier Division will kick off on Dec 4.
Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) secretary Hashim Mohd Yusof said they were happy to have received six entries, adding that the league would start as scheduled.
“The format will be two rounds of matches at venues around Malaysia. There will be no formal home venues for the teams. We are organising this on a carnival basis with seven venues in mind. Matches will be played at one venue each weekend. The MHF will be responsible for the venues,” he aid.
All six teams will automatically qualify for the knockout stages, which will see eight teams in the fray.
Division One champions UiTM and runners-up Armed Forces Airod will join the Premier Division teams in the quarter-finals.
Hashim said the team managers’ meeting would be held on Nov 21.
“All teams have submitted their team lists for verification but they can still make changes at the team managers’ meeting,” he said.
Hashim said that KL would be the venue for the matches on the opening weekend. The other venues identified are in Penang, Ipoh, Kuantan, Malacca, Johor Baru and Seremban.
