Penang vow to comply with conditions

By RONNIE OH

GEORGE TOWN: Penang are confident they will still feature in the Super League when the new season kicks off next year.

Penang are one of six teams threatened with expulsion by the FA of Malaysia (FAM) from all competitions for failing to meet the Oct 31 deadline set by the national body to settle outstanding debts.

The other teams affected are Super League outfits Kelantan and Perak as well as Premier League sides Shahzan Muda, Malacca and Pahang.

The FAM competitions committee had announced on Monday that the six teams had failed to meet the conditions required to play in the MSL next season, which included a minimum budget of RM2.5mil and a RM150,000 deposit.

FA of Penang (FAP) president Datuk Seri Zahrain Hashim (pic) told a press conferrence yesterday: “As far as I am concerned, the question of Penang getting expelled from the Super League does not arise.

“I have met the FAM general secretary (Datuk Azzuddin Ahmad) yesterday (Thursday) to clarify our position and assured him that we will comply. We have also been given a week to iron out matters to meet all the requirements,” added Zahrain, who was just last month returned unopposed as FAP president.

Zahrain also clarified that all the players’ salaries for this season had been settled.

“We have also finalised arrangements with the EPF to fully settle all outstanding contributions in instalment,” he said.

“The only thing still outstanding is the RM46,000 owed to three players from the 2008 squad.”

Zahrain also announced that Penang had begun preparations for the new season, including naming former midfield maestro Shukor Salleh as manager.

Former state coach Shukor has also been tasked with scouting for the right players, picking the coach and meeting the Dec 9 deadline for the registration of players.
