Bowlers in line for the elusive gold
PETALING JAYA: The national boys’ and girls’ back-up bowlers have put themselves within striking distance of the elusive gold medal in the Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam when they qualified for the elimination round of the team events yesterday.
Mohd Syafiq Ridhwan Abdul Malek, Kang Bo Long, Kelvin Keong and Rodson Tong pulled through the second block of three games with 2.440 pinfalls to be ranked third in the boys’ qualifiers with a total of 5,203.
Malaysia went into the second block with a 45-pin lead over Japan from Thursday’s first block and got off well with an opening fourth game of 900 pinfalls.
The boys, however, were slightly off the mark in the fifth and final game when they could only down 795 and 745 pins to let the South Koreans move ahead with a total of 5,405 pinfalls.
But at least the boys did enough to set up a meeting against Kuwait in today’s semi-finals. South Korea will face United Arab Emirates in the other semi-final.
In the girls’ competition, Fatin Syazliana Adi Nasution, Tengku Emanina Laily Tengku Zahri, Sharon Koh and Sin Li Jane moved up a rank into second place on the last day of the qualifying rounds.
The girls downed 2,340 pins yesterday for 4,814 total to sit behind South Korea (5,185).
The Malaysian girls will be up against Japan while top seeds South Korea will face Hong Kong in today’s semi-finals.
