Women’s team given place in Champions Challenge meet
KUALA LUMPUR: The national women’s hockey team have been given a place in the Champions Challenge II hockey tournament which will be held in Kazan, Russia from June 21-27.
The Malaysians were the first reserve for the inaugural tournament and gained entry after the withdrawal of Netherlands Antilles.
The other teams in the fray are Belgium, Ireland, Chile, India, Ukraine, Canada and Russia.
The Champions Challenge is being introduced this year as part of the International Hockey Federation (FIH)’s effort to promote hockey.
Malaysian Women’s Hockey Association (MWHA) secretary Dr S. Shamala said yesterday that Malaysia will be taking part in the meet.
“Our ranking improved by one spot recently and now we have a chance to move up by taking part in the Champions Challenge II tournament.
“The team are in training and we will now give full attention to their preparations for the tournament,” said Shamala.
Malaysia are also interested in playing in the AA-India national championships which will have about 28 teams in the fray.
“We are discussing with India on the matter and will know by next week if they can accommodate us.”
