Meritus hope to break into Formula One
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia’s Meritus Racing Team — the only non-European outfit in the GP2 racing series — have big dreams.
Not only are they aiming to make a big impact in the GP2 series, the team are also hoping to be a part of the prestigious Formula One Grand Prix one day — with an all-Malaysian cast!
Meritus Racing sporting director Firhat Mokhzani said Alex Yoong was the team’s driver initially but had to pull out due to growing business commitment.
“We aspire to have a 100% Malaysian team and will continue to search for local drivers.
“As for being part of the Formula One scene, we hope to get there some day,” he told reporters after the launching of the Malaysian GP2 Team by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi here yesterday.
The team, whose current drivers are Italy’s Marcno Bonanomi and Portugal’s Alvaro Parente, will compete in two support races in next month’s Malaysian F1 Grand Prix — the Formula BMW Pacific and GP2 Asia series.
The Malaysian F1 Grand Prix will be held from April 3-5.
