Sarawakian qualifies for second butterfly event in Asian Youth Games
By LIM TEIK HUAT
SHAH ALAM: Bukit Jalil-based swimmers Ian James Barr and Hii Siew Siew endured mixed fortunes as the national age-group swimming championships came to a close at Darul Ehsan Aquatic Centre in Shah Alam yesterday.
Siew Siew qualified for her second event at the inaugural Asian Youth Games in Singapore in the 200m butterfly of the girls’ 13-14 age-group but the lanky Ian missed out despite making a clean sweep of all the backstroke titles in record-breaking fashion in the same division for boy’s yesterday.
Siew Siew’s winning time of 2:19.95 in her pet 200m butterfly race was also better than her own meet record of 2:21.40 set last year.
The qualifying mark for the Asian Youth Games in the event is 2:22.19. The Sarawakian had beaten the qualifying mark for the 100m butterfly the previous day.
Siew Siew: Potential to be the country’s top butterfly swimmer. A country can only sent a maximum of six male and six female swimmers aged from 14-17 years for July’s Asian Youth Games.
Yesterday, Siew Siew also captured the 200m freestyle gold in 2:11.79, her fifth individual title in the meet.
Her other wins came in the 100m and 400m freestyle but it is in the 200m butterfly where she has the best potential to earn national prominence.
Based on her latest effort, she looks set to earn a slot in the 200m butterfly for the Laos SEA Games next year.
Siew Siew had won a surprise bronze for Malaysia when she made her SEA Games debut in Korat two years ago and the Malaysian Open in Seremban from May 20-23 next month will offer her the first attempt to qualify on merit.
Ian will also have to rise to the occasion in the Malaysian Open if he hopes to earn qualification for the Asian Youth Games.
The 1.83m Ian smashed Daniel Bego’s previous record of 29.44 set five years ago in winning the 50m backstroke in 28.86 yesterday.
Ian went on to capture a second gold medal of the day in the 200m freestyle in 2:00.53 and took his individual tally to seven.
The Kuala Lumpur-born swimmer also swept both the 200m and 400m individual medley gold medals apart from coming out tops in the 100m freestyle, 100m and 200m backstroke.
With his height and reach, Ian affirmed his potential to emerge as the next top backstroker after Lim Keng Liat with his performances over the three days of competition.
”This is my best performance in the national age-group meet but I still missed out on qualifying for the Asian Youth Games.
“It’s not easy to make the cut as the mark is quite high for the boy’s competition. The qualifying standards are as good as the SEA Games silver medal mark.
“But I believe I have a better chance in the 200m individual medley, so I will try for it in the Malaysian Open,” said Ian.
Hosts Selangor overtook Sabah on the final day of competition to emerge overall champions with a 38-50-39 medal-tally.
Sabah finished second with 30-20-24 ahead of Sarawak, who managed 27-30-32. Kuala Lumpur finished fourth with 19-24-24.
