Football: Kedah keep quarter-final hopes alive with win over HK team
PETALING JAYA: Kedah kept alive their quarter-final hopes in the AFC Cup competition when they picked up their first win in Group G, defeating Eastern Athletic of Hong Kong 2-0 at the Darulaman Stadium in Alor Star last night.
Mohd Farizal Rozali (pic) opened accounts in the 27th minute and Azrul Ahmad scored the second goal in the 77th minute.
The Canaries, who lost the first two matches against Hanoi ACB (0-2) and Thailand’s Chonburi FC (0-1), needed nothing less than a victory to stay in contention for a place in the knockout stage of the competition. The win lifted Kedah off the bottom of the table to second place on better goal difference than Eastern Athletic and Hanoi.
Kedah, who made it to the quarter-finals last year, will play against Eastern Athletic again in their next match at the Mongkok Stadium on April 21.
Leaders Chonburi moved closer to the quarter-finals with a 2-0 away victory over Hanoi ACB at the Hang Day Stadium last night. The Thai club have the maximum nine points from three matches.
Malaysia’s other representative in the competition, Johor FC, slumped to 0-2 defeat by South China FC of Hong Kong in a Group F match at the Mongkok Stadium. The scorers for the Hong Kong side were Man Pei Tak (14th) and M. Carios (55th).
PSMS Medan of Indonesia edged VB Sport of Maldives 1-0 in their Group F home match at the Baring Jaka Stadium.
